New Mexico has had an extensive history relating to nuclear weapons and energy. From the testing of the first atomic bomb north of White Sands National Monument to the uranium mining on the Navajo Nation. This nuclear history has caused significant impacts on the people and the lands of our state. From higher rates of cancer among "downwinders" (people who were located downwind of nuclear tests and would get radiation poisoning as a result) and Navajo uranium miners to large swaths of the Navajo nation being uninhabitable due to uranium.
This page will focus on the impact that radiation has on the people and environment of New Mexico. Many of these works reflect how biology may interact with other fields, like, physics and politics.

A PBS Documentary focused on the experiences of downwinders of the atomic bomb, with a particular focus on the people who were downwind of the atomic tests in Nevada. The article provides an overview of the reasons why people were close to the atomic tests (oftentimes these people were soldiers who were testing nuclear/chemical/biological equipment), the various ailments they suffered as a result of being downwind, and the oftentimes arduous process that they faced in order to receive restitution for their suffering.
