Overview of Southern Tiwa

The Southern Tiwa Language is the primary indigenous language of the Isleta Pueblo, Sandia Pueblo, and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (in Texas). The southern Tiwa language is part of the Tiwa subgroup of the Tanoan language family. Southern Tiwa has three main dialects Sandía, Isleta, and Ysleta del Sur (Tigua). These three dialects are all very similar and mutually intelligible. According to the Endangered Languages Project, there are roughly 1,600 speakers and is classified as "endangered."
